Kyra spent the first few years in front of the camera. Her father (Phil Monk FRPS) was an award winning photographer and a Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society, he had a photography studio on the Kings Road in London and as a child Kyra would visit London fashion shows while he worked. Later she spent time on his portrait and landscape courses at home in wales, the ‘National Photographic Centre of Wales’ where he taught. He brought Kyra her first camera, a Pentax ME Super for her 10th Birthday.
Kyra studied Media and Communications at Goldsmiths’ College in London where she studied all aspects of contemporary media with practical training and studies into the influence, effect and application of film, radio, photography, television and press. She worked in the Film Department taking stills on the MA film shoots and graduated with a BA First Class Honours in Media and Communications and a passion for the film cutting room having co-produced, directed and edited short films for her degree.
Kyra became a full-time video editor in London, working on documentaries and music videos, her show reel includes documentaries on Damien Hirst (Gagosian Gallery Expo), and Ub40 and music videos for Fun Lovin’ Criminals (Gay Night), Blue (All Rise), Holly Vallence (Kiss Kiss, Down Boy) to name a few. Firetree Photography was launched in 2007 after Kyra left London with her family and has become well established in Leicestershire and Northamptonshire for her relaxed and fresh visual style photographing weddings portraits and commercial photography/videography.
With her background in documentary videography and understanding of the social and psychological application of the media Kyra uses photography to capture a moment in life rather than staged images. As a professionally trained photographer and videographer, Kyra doesn’t just take images that are well exposed and technically correct, she works with people and children to capture emotive ‘stories’ so whether a wedding, portrait or corporate project, the images are an accurate document of that moment. With her experience in script writing and video editing a unique part of her service is to find and visually script ‘social stories’ for families and businesses alike.
